Sooke Potholes

The Sooke Potholes Regional Park is one of the most beautiful parks on Vancouver Island. Hiking trails wind through an incredible landscape with lookout points for breath-taking views over river cliffs any time of year. In the summer, the stream slows and the sun comes out, making it the perfect place to find your own little swimming hole, or enjoy stream-side swimming from one of its marked pebble beaches.

Whiffin Spit

Whiffin Spit is a popular walking area with locals and offers spectacular views of the ocean. This easy 2.7km walk will take you along a flat gravel path with ocean views on both sides, weaving along rocky beaches and lapping waves. At the far end of the spit, you’ll find a small lighthouse. There’s always the chance of spotting seals, sea lions, eagles and other creatures!

Sooke Region Museum

The Sooke Region Museum is a community museum that explores the heritage of the region from Sooke to Port Renfrew, with exhibits in both the main museum building and around the grounds. The museum also operates the local visitor information centre for the region. The museum holds various special event during the year, has a gift shop with local arts & crafts.

Ocean Fishing

Bluefin Fishing Adventures offers year-round fishing tours right from Sooke with all your bait and fishing gear provided. You’ll find large Halibut and several types of Salmon as they migrate annually past the West Coast of Vancouver Island. Your expert fishing guide will clean, fillet and bag your catch for you to take home.

Incase you missed it, you’ll see the area featured in the second half of Episode 3. The episode begins in Whistler, before moving on to Nanaimo via ferry, then down the island to the Malahat Skywalk. After spending most of the day completing challenges in the Victoria area, the teams were instructed to make their way to the Sooke Boardwalk.

Paddleboards and a challenge were waiting for the teams on the boardwalk. Using the Rotary Pier as a starting point, they paddled out to white floating buoys along the waterway to locate three matching vacation location tags that included a matching flight, hotel, and an activity. The partner that did the paddling found it extremely challenging due to the strong wind and current that day. Despite the difficulties, the sun shone, and the scenery provided a gorgeous backdrop for the challenge. Each contestant found a way to fight through the difficult experience and received their next clue, directing them on to the final stop of the episode, Whiffin Spit.

The teams drove themselves to Whiffin Spit and made their way only a short distance down the path. The team that arrived first won a trip to Nassau in the Bahamas. Mayor Maja Tait and host John Montgomery were there to greet the contestants, welcoming them to Sooke. And unfortunately, the last team to reach Whiffin Spit was eliminated.

Overall, it was a very brief tour of South Vancouver Island, scratching only the surface of the amazing locations we have in the area. But we were thrilled to have Sooke included! Maybe in a future season they’ll need to take a Big Zip?

The Technology

To start off, before you even arrive, you’ll need to decide on what you’ll use to capture those photos and videos.

You can bring your phone ziplining to take pictures and videos, but you’re taking a risk by carrying it in your hand. We recommend using a case with wrist strap to use while ziplining. You could also use a selfie stick with wrist strap, as long as your phone is secured in place, a lot of selfie sticks aren’t very secure, so it’s not ideal.

A digital camera is a really great option, because it’s less expensive to replace than a phone if you damage it! Regardless, if you’re bringing along a digital camera, we recommend you keep a wrist strap secured at all times.

GoPros allow you to capture both video and photos from a unique first-person perspective. If you want to wear a GoPro for your zipline tour, a helmet mount will give you the best result, as a chest mount can interfere with your harness. We offer helmets with GoPro mounts at no charge if you bring your own camera. Or you can rent a GoPro from us for an additional charge.

Camera Settings for Ziplining

Unfortunately, many times the speed of the zipline may blur some of your shots. If you’re bringing a device to capture still photos, you’ll want to adjust the camera settings to increase your shutter speed.

Try ‘burst mode’, (aka continuous shooting). On most phones, you can hold down the shutter button to take a series of photos in a matter of seconds. This works great for motion activities like ziplining and allows you to choose the best shot when you’re done.

And if possible. You’ll want to do a trial run to make sure you’ve done it correctly. Try capturing a friend on their bike or in another motion situation.

Photo Tips for Ziplining

1. Wear bright colours like red, yellow, or turquoise. These all pop against the forest backdrop and look amazing.

2. Don’t just take selfies. Have a friend take your picture from the arrival platform, and take turns going first. This will give your pictures a much better sense of scale than just a close-up from a Selfie.

3. If you have a friend taking your picture from the arrival platform, make sure you stay facing forward, avoid spinning at that time. While action shots are fun, they often don’t turn out as well as one where you’re staying still in your harness.

4. Keep your legs closed. Keep in mind you are in a harness, and this can be an unflattering angle.

5. Give it some personality! Wave or give a thumbs up.

6. Smile. Even if you’re nervous, don’t forget to smile.

It’s estimated that three to five percent of people have some sort of acrophobia (fear of heights). Sometimes you don’t even realize it, until you’re high off the ground.

Here are a few tips to help you face your fears and enjoy the zipline experience:

1 – Enjoy the Scenery

By looking around you, instead of what’s right below, you’ll feel more stable. The stunning surroundings of the forest are calming and a great way to distract yourself from the distance below.

2 – Talk to Us

Tell your guide and other zipliners about being nervous. Your guide can help you feel comfortable, and give you some advice to help you get going. Take comfort in knowing that you are not alone and others in your group may even share the same feelings of nervousness.

3 – It’s Safe!

Adrena LINE’s top priority is the well being of each and every guest who takes part in the tour. All equipment utilized meets or exceeds industry standards. Our ziplines and platforms are inspected daily and are registered with the Technical Safety BC. In addition, our guides are thoroughly trained in every aspect of working at heights, so you can feel confident you are in good hands while on your tour. Trust your guides and remind yourself that you are safely secured onto the zipline.

4 – Don’t Forget to Breathe

A tried and true method for calming yourself down is to focus on your breathing. Count to 5 for each inhale and exhale to slow your breath down. We have some of the cleanest air in the world so think about how refreshing the air is as you breathe in and out.

5 – Do it For Yourself

You have the ability to face your fears and turn the experience into something fun that you will look back on and be proud of.
 

So “Can You Zipline if You’re Afraid of Heights”?

The answer is YES, as long as you’re open to conquering your fears and know that you’re the type of person who will be pleased with yourself for pushing yourself out of your comfort zone. After all, you know yourself best.

If the fear is crippling, you won’t be able to enjoy your experience by being terrified the whole time, so it might not be for you. Don’t be ashamed not to go. Do only what makes you feel comfortable.

Clothing to Wear Ziplining

For your lower half, long shorts or pants will be more comfortable. Fitted jeans are fine, but the most comfortable thing to wear ziplining is activewear like leggings, or joggers. For your top, any shirt of your choosing will be fine for ziplining. You’ll be flying through the breeze, so check the local temperature for Sooke, BC before heading out. Sometimes here at Adrena LINE, you’ll get a cool ocean breeze, so keep that in mind depending on the time of year.

Clothing NOT to wear ziplining

– Skirts
– Capes! (sorry superheros)
– Baggy pants, they can ride up when wearing your harness.
– Very short shorts, the leg harness could become irritating on your thighs.

Accessories

You might be wondering. Can I wear glasses while ziplining? The answer is yes! As with any outdoor activity, you’re taking a risk of them falling off your face if they’re too loose fitting. But if they stay on your face when you look down, then you’re safe to wear them ziplining. If you’re at all concerned, just keep your face forward into the wind as you zip.

If you’re wondering about any loose personal items like car keys or your phone. They should fit in a secured pocket, or a small fitted fanny pack.

Items NOT to wear ziplining

– Long necklaces.
– Any jewelry items that do not fasten securely.
– Large bulky fanny packs.
– A backpack, these are not allowed and can be locked up in guest services.

Cameras and Tech for Ziplining

Phones, cameras, go-pros, we know everyone has a lot of tech these days, and we’re all looking for that perfect shot to share.

Here’s what you can expect

You and your friends get hooked up into custom safety harnesses, specially designed for this one-of-a-kind of thrill ride. We’ll run through all the safety procedures, then load you onto one of our off-roading vehicles. (Selfies with the Sooke Squatch are always welcome!)

You’ll ride through the forest, getting a view of the ziplines from below and all the amazing large trees on our property, before arriving at the top.

When it’s your turn, we’ll hook you up to the zipline and perform all the safety checks. While you wait, you can take in the view of the ocean, the forest, and the Arbutus trees around you.

When your guide gives the O-K, it’s time to take off! Race your companion, but don’t forget to enjoy the view!

After the ride of a lifetime, you’ll arrive safe and sound with the help of our automatic electric breaking system, and a helpful guide will unhook you.

About The Big Zip

It’s been in the planning phase for years but started with the building plans early 2022. We used a helicopter to lay the first line and after that we pulled the other 3 by hand because the cable was too heavy for the helicopter. This was done by one of our team Zipping along that first line with cable in tow! Lifting the tower into place took 2 days with a crane.

All the lumber from the trees we felled is being used for various projects throughout the property.

The trolleys have magnets in them to help slow guests down. The back up brake system is a heavy duty spring pack. The harness is similar to a paragliding harness and it was made locally in BC just for us.

Our ziplines run through a large coastal rainforest situated on a sloping hillside. This location makes it the ideal spot to view East Sooke, the Olympic Mountains, and the Salish Sea. #2 -The Thrill

Hitting speeds of up to 60 km/hr, you’re sure to experience the thrill and excitement you’re looking for in a fun safe atmosphere. Our ziplines and platforms are inspected daily and are registered with Technical Safety BC, so you can feel confident you are in good hands while on your tour. All you need to do is enjoy the ride.

#3 – The Trail Ride

Since our zipline course is located on a hillside, we’ll need to drive you up to the top in one of our open-air all terrain vehicles. You’ll wind through the forest on old logging roads for a 10 minute drive to the top with a guide pointing out the sights along the way. It’s a fun bonus adventure before your zipline tour even begins.

#4 – The Trees

Our ziplines run through some of the biggest and most beautiful trees in the world. Some Douglas Firs standing around 100m tall. In addition to being a great sturdy zipline anchor, these trees provide shade in the summer, keeping everyone at a comfortable temperature. Most forests on Vancouver Island are dominated by coniferous trees such as Douglas-fir, western red cedar and western hemlock. The remaining forest is made up of broad-leafed trees such as red alder, big leaf maple and arbutus.

#5 – The Weather

Vancouver Island has some of the most mild weather in Canada. Almost anytime is a great time to go ziplining, so we run rain or shine. Even when it rains on Vancouver Island, the temperature is mild, and it can be a really beautiful time to be in the forest. Rain ponchos are available for sale when you check-in and complimentary lockers are also available should you want to bring a change of clothes.

It’s been hard watching some of our trees come down, especially the ones we used to hang out in. However, we’ve chosen to view these changes as an opportunity for growth and improvement. For every zipline we had to disassemble, we’re installing another further up in our forest. As things move from the planning phase into execution we’re starting to see our plans take shape in the trees and it’s got us pretty excited. Additionally, we’re grateful that when the project is complete our friends and families will have a safer, more reliable commute to and from home, work and of course us!

We’d also like to extend a huge thank you to everyone who has reached out in the past weeks. We’re touched by all of the concern and support and can’t wait to show everyone what we’ve been working on.
