Green Initiatives

Adrena LINE is taking action to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions throughout our entire operation. We participated in a regional voluntary program called GreenStart and are implementing the recommendations they provided to us in order to reduce our impact on the environment.

Our unique business approach is that we incorporate the natural environment as part of our Zipline tour on our privately owned acreage in the Sooke Hills. With this unique type of tour in this unique locale, it was a natural goal of ours to institute best practices around the environmental impact of our operation.

We have now implemented the following changes to our organization:

Waste Reduction

We have eliminated the bottle of water provided to guests after each tour. We have set up an Energy Star water cooler instead and also offer, for sale, the re-usable style of yoga water bottles that people can use.  We also recycle all items that are available to be recycled.

Energy Use

We have installed occupancy sensor lights in our back closet, our two bathrooms and harness closet. We have replaced incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs. We have also installed a temperature dial on our heater and we make sure that when the doors are open it is switched off.

Water

We currently use a pressure washer to clean our outdoor surfaces and our vehicles. The hoses have nozzles on them so we do not waste water.

Sustainable Purchasing

We buy “green”, Energy Star or recycled items whenever we can (such as the paper that our rack cards and other marketing materials are printed on) and our office supplies. This will be an ongoing effort to phase out old items and purchase “greener” options. The cleaning products that we use are a revolutionary breakthrough in green cleaning technology, utilizing potent cleaning properties of various ingredients derived from natural, biodegradable, renewable and sustainable botanical resources. They are also packaged in recyclable containers.

The paper that we use is 100% recycled. It is also 100% FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified recycled and Green-e certified recognizing that the paper we use is made with 100% renewable, fossil fuel free energy.

Transportation

We have purchased a new ATV that will carry 10 guests at one time and will run off bio diesel. This has eliminated our ATV’s which only carried 5 guests and run off standard diesel. Also, by offering two shuttle departures a day from the Inner Harbour area from May 1 through September 30 each year we hope to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions that our guests would have otherwise produced by arranging their own transport.

By operating our business where we do we are preserving over 100 acres of temperate rainforest. We pride ourselves in providing an opportunity for visitors to immerse themselves in this spectacular environment and learn about its natural elements and wildlife first hand. By completing the initiatives listed in the Green Start Report we hope to encourage others to run sustainable businesses by installing practical measures to help contribute to a greener region.

Green Awards & Partnerships

We have recently been awarded the 2011 Ecostar Land Stewardship Award sponsored by Jack FM which recognizes us as an organization that is working on preserving, enhancing and restoring ecosystems and land for urban forests and natural parks. Innovation and education, protection and preservation of our natural landscapes are important aspects of the Land Stewardship Award.

We have also recently been awarded the 2011 Tourism Vancouver Island Tourism Sustainability Award.  This distinction is awarded to a stakeholder organization that has shown leadership and initiative on Vancouver Island.

We are partners with The Land Conservancy and we actively donate to their projects. When TLC Members take to the tree-tops with us this year, they will receive $10 off the cost of the tour. In addition, we will donate $5 from these discounted rates to TLC’s Wild Hills and Beaches Campaign – an ongoing effort to protect 5,800 acres of wilderness in the Sooke Hills and at Jordan River and Sandcut Beach.

TLC and Adrena LINE have recognized each other as organizations with similar environmental values and goals. Adrena LINE’s low-impact, nature-based tours are consistent with TLC’s views on sustainable land-use: an economic activity that promotes the use and enjoyment of natural areas without degrading ecosystems and habitats. We both agree that appreciation of wilderness and biodiversity is critical to conservation and can be best fostered through direct experiences in nature.

We as a company will stay active and continue to evaluate and construct ideas to further reduce our environmental impact.
